Olive wood is graded by the grain. These pens are made from premium grade which has full grain throughout. The beauty of this precious wood lies in the fact that no trees were felled or cut down during its production. Every October, the branches of this protected tree are pruned and sold to local Bethlehem craftsmen, who use them to create stunning items.
In general, olive trees are very long-lived, and a number of specimens are considered among the oldest known trees in the world. However, because the trunks of mature olive trees tend to become hollow over time, exact dating can be problematic. Carbon dating and surrounding archeological evidence is sometimes used to estimate a treeโs age, and reports of the oldest olive trees in the Mediterranean region range anywhere from several hundred to even thousands of years oldโwith many still bearing fruit. An Olive tree located within the Al-Walaja village in Bethlehem is estimated to be around 5,000 years old. It extends over 250 sq m, stretches to around 13 metres in height, and its roots extend some 25 meters into the earth.
This wood species is not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
Bethlehem olive wood is a pleasure to turn and the grain produces fantastically patterned and totally unique pens. Felt carry pouch included, in choice of colours.
