This Cigar style large ballpoint pen has a spectacular grain, one of the best pens I ever made for the unique patterning achieved using coconut wood. You won't find many pens made using this wood which is a shame as the maker is rewarded with amazing looking pens.
Hand made in my workshop.
Coconut wood produces a really unusual multicoloured grain pattern. The pen, is twist action ballpoint, option of black or blue ink with chrome fittings and is finished with multiple coats of lacquer for very tough long life protection, the final coats of wax on top of this give a really good deal in the hand. Impressive grain pattern makes unique gift.
Reddish brown fibres embedded in a lighter tan or light brown coloured body. Fibres are more densely packed toward the outside of the tree trunk, becoming more and more sparse toward the centre of the tree. The centre core of the tree is soft and contains none of the darker vascular bundles that give the wood its characteristic look and hardness. Coconut has a medium to fine texture, though it is by no means even or uniform on account of the contrast between the dense, darker fibres, and the soft, lighter cellulose structure of the wood. Grain is very straight, and contains no growth rings, knots, or defects.
Coconut is quite difficult to work with both machine and hand tools. The hard fibers contrast with the soft body of the wood, and can be brittle and splinter or pull out. Very sharp tools and correct cutting angles are required to get clean results, can be very time consuming. Mechanical pen parts sourced from a major seller, very reliable and high quality.
This wood species is not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species
The final finish reflects the lack of homology of the wood and the soft and hard parts, which end up polished glossy or matt depending on the hardness of the different segments of the grain. This combination of matt, gloss finish and multicolour grain produces unique pens and rewards the efforts needed to turn the wood.
Everyone I show these coconut pens to are in wonder at the pattern and contrast of the grain, you won't be disappointed.
A unique and genuinely hand turned wooden ballpoint pen made by the shop owner in his own workshop. This is the actual pen you will receive and comes with a free felt carry pouch in a choice of colours.
