The fountain pen parts are the most expensive premier ones currently available in the UK and the wood comes from the UK’s largest supplier of exotic timber.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Thuya Burr wood is very difficult to craft, and many hours of work has gone into shaping and finishing this pen. The wooden parts of the pen are first hand turned and rough sanded before stabilising the surface with shellac. Once sealed the wood is hand sanded with ever finer grades, and shellac sealer applied to stabilise between each sanding grade. The final surface of the wood is then hand polished using three increasingly finer buffing wheels and rubbing compounds to give a glass like finish to the wood. The wood is then protected by five, individually applied and cured, layers of tough melamine lacquer. The pen wood is finally protected by several coats of carnauba wax before being hand polished to give a luxurious feel when held in the hand. The result is a high quality handmade writing instrument, that truly reflects the individuality and cost of the executive quality pen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUniquely Beautiful Wood: Each piece of thuya burl has its own pattern of swirling \"eyes\" and rich colour, ensuring your pen is one-of-a-kind. Thuya burr is a highly figured burl, nearly always sourced from the root burl of the tree. The figure features mesmerising, interlocked, and irregular grain with distinctive, perfectly round clusters of small knots called \"eyes,\" similar to bird's-eye maple but generally darker and more pronounced. The colour ranges from lustrous golden brown to orangish\/reddish brown, with darker streaks that can be nearly black. The color tends to darken as the wood ages. Thuya burr wood has a very distinct, pleasant, and highly aromatic smell. It has a pronounced cedar-like scent with hints of pine and spice, often described as smelling like an old pencil sharpener when cut or sanded. It is difficult to work with as it is brittle and prone to tear-out and cracking when worked with tools due to the highly figured, swirled, and irregular grain structure.
